Answers to Your Bid
This web page discusses the problem hands supplied on Tony's Bridge Page - Your Bid.
Hand 1: East's hand was:
S x H 9x D AKQJ10xxx C xxEast was showing a wish to play in 5D. West passed and 5D made 11 tricks. However it could have been beaten with HA and a ruff, plus the SA. 5H would make 11 tricks because the defenders cannot engineer a ruff: (North holding SA... Hx Dx C...; and South S... HAx Dxx C...).
The problem with the bidding comes if the 5D bid was agreeing hearts with a hand such as:
S xx H Axxx D AKxxx C xxI'm afraid that after the Opponents pre-empt to the 5-level these clever bids have to go out of the window and you have to resort to natural bidding; hence 5D/5H/6D/6H! to play.
